MSTM Students Visit MakerLab

Last Friday, over 100 Masters of Science of Technology Management (MSTM) students visited the MakerLab. Our Gurus demonstrated 3D Scanning and Printing and helped teams of students print out a variety of objects. As shown in the photos below, the MSTM students were captivated by the magic of 3D printing. Introducing students to this amazing new technology is one of key priorities. One of the students, Doreen Tseng, blogged about the visit to the MakerLab. If you have interest in reserving the MakerLab for your class, please let us know! IMG_20130913_123346IMG_20130913_123702

Things we Learned at the 3D Printing Expo

The MakerLab (Aric, Danny, Ryan, and Vishal) attended the Chicago 3D Printing Conference & Expo at McCormick Place last week. Thanks to Hod Lipson, we were given the opportunity to speak at the Expo on Thursday, July 11 and share our story. We spoke about our Lab and the cool things that have been made there so far, such as Jeff's lightbulbs and Ben's wifi display. In addition to sharing our story, we had the opportunity to learn about recent advances in 3D printing from experts such as Bre Pettis (CEO, MakerBot, recently acquired by Stratysys), Scott Crump (Chairman and Founder, Stratasys), and Abe Reichental (CEO, 3D Systems). Here are some of the interesting things we learned:

--MakerBot's Digitizer 3D scanner is making nice progress and should be available by the end of 2013.

--3D Systems is beta testing a 3D printer that prints food from cartridges inspired by the Keurig coffee system. During the conference, they also announced a partnership with Deloitte to accelerate adoption of 3D printing.

--Stratasys has 3D printers that print over 100 different types of materials.

--Microsoft is placing a heavy emphasis on 3D printing and trying to make it as easy as 2D printing.

--Xerox (PARC Division) is working on technology for printing electronic circuits and new types of batteries.

--General Electric has over 300 3D printers. They are also encouraging open innovation with 3D design contests. The technology has significant implications for Aerospace.

--Disney has started a new initiative that allows children to print Barbie doll accessories at home.

MakerBot Webinar (May 22, 2013)

new_disp MakerBot just announced that they will be hosting a free webinar next Wednesday (May 22) at 11pm CST. This webinar will focus on how 3D printers can enhance product development.  According to the announcement, participants will learn the following:

1. A step-by-step walk through of the 3D printing process, from CAD file to printed part.

2. An intro to PLA filament, a high-detail, durable bioplastic.

3. The impressive array of prototypes, parts, and models that a desktop 3D printer can produce

We will be broadcasting this webinar from the MakerLab that day (special hours). So, please stop by to join us!

Students Photocopy Objects with their iPhones!

On Friday, April 5, nearly 20 University of Illinois students stopped by the MakerLab to learn how to photocopy objects with their iPhones. This session was taught by Katie Khau, a UI student in Art & Design and a MakerLab Trainer. Katie demonstrated how to photocopy objects using the new iPhone app, 123D Catch (www.123dapp.com/catch). As part of this demonstration, Katie printed out a small scale photocopy of a 3D printed replica of Rodin's "The Thinker" (www.thingiverse.com/thing:34343). She has also put up a tutorial, if you want to try this. If you have questions, please post on our Forums

In the coming months, we plan to offer more training sessions such as this. Our next session is a tutorial on Google Sketchup on Friday, April 19 from 12:00-1:00pm. To RSVP, email us at uimakerlab@illinois.edu or signup on facebook. Subscribe to our blog RSS feed to be the first to hear about events and other exciting news from MakerLab.

Scan and Print, Now in 3D at the Illinois MakerLab

2D scanning and printing is passe! Come visit the MakerLab on Friday April 5, 2:00 to 4:00 pm, and learn how to scan your stuff and print it, all in 3D. Learn to scan in 3D using a camera or smart phone using Autodesk’s 123D Catch software. If you have an Iphone you can download the 123D Catch app straight to your phone from http://www.123dapp.com/catch and then visit the lab @103 Surveying Bldg. Sign up for the event on our Facebook page.
